Dominion Energy urges South Carolina customers to conserve energy

01/31/2026

CAYCE, S.C. (Jan. 31, 2026) – Due to extremely low temperatures and increased demand for electricity across the system, Dominion Energy is urging customers in South Carolina to conserve energy as heating systems work extra hard to keep homes and businesses warm.

Customers should conserve energy as much as possible. Here are some safe, simple ways customers can reduce their energy use now:

  • Adjust the thermostat to 68 degrees or lower when the temperatures drop. Each degree below 68 can conserve energy and reduce heating-related costs. Only raise the temperature on your thermostat 1-2 degrees at a time to avoid activating auxiliary heat unnecessarily, particularly during periods of high demand such as the early morning hours or end of the workday. This can significantly increase the amount of energy used and have an impact on monthly bills.

  • Conserve energy in other areas of the home as heating systems work around-the-clock. For example, turn off non-essential lights and appliances and avoid using major power-consuming equipment such as electric fireplaces, dishwashers, washers and dryers during early-morning hours. For safety and energy reasons, avoid leaving space heaters on in unoccupied rooms.

  • Allow adequate air flow through the HVAC system. Leave interior doors open and ensure vents are open and unobstructed. Do not block returns.

  • Sign up online and receive daily energy usage alerts for customers with smart meters.View daily or hourly usage and costs.

  • Enroll in Dominion Energy’s Reward Hours program. Residential customers enrolled in the program receive incentives for managing their electricity usage certain hours of the year. Reward Hours occur throughout the year but are typically scheduled when weather is very cold or extremely hot.
