Dominion to Award $1.2 Million in Environmental Grants

- Now accepting applications for grants up to $50,000
- Projects should focus on environment stewardship
- Recipients will be announced in April

RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Nonprofit organizations will share up to $1.2 million through a new environmental stewardship initiative, sponsored by Dominion Resources. The competitive program is designed to support specific, short-term projects that improve the environment.

"Funding meaningful projects that encourage the understanding, appreciation and preservation of our environment is a key focus for us," said Pamela Faggert, chief environmental officer for Dominion. "We are looking forward to partnering with even more non-profit organizations across our footprint."

Organizations in and near the communities served by Dominion can submit applications through March 2, requesting up to $50,000 each. The grants program is an expansion of one piloted in Virginia in 2013.

Dominion will make the grants available through the Dominion Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm. Projects funded under last year's pilot program in Virginia include the Chesapeake Bay Exploration Lab in Virginia Beach where visitors learn about the health of the Chesapeake Bay through hands-on learning stations, and a program in partnership with Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River monitoring E. Coli levels.

Dominion will consider grant requests that focus on one or more of the following priorities:

  • Protecting and preserving natural habitats
  • Monitoring and enhancing water quality
  • Preventing pollution and improving open spaces
  • Making nature accessible
  • Educating the public about environmental stewardship
