RICHMOND, Va.– Dominion Energy Virginia today announced a new Hosting Capacity Tool to provide guidance to customers about which parts of the Dominion Energy electric distribution system may be more suitable to site new clean energy installations.

The online, interactive map shows the grid’s available hosting capacity to help guide customers on where to place the installations, ultimately saving them time and money. The tool also will improve safety and reliability by indicating how many resources can be connected to the distribution grid while limiting voltage and thermal issues.

“We have seen solar energy grow by leaps and bounds across our North Carolina and Virginia service area and expect that growth to continue for years to come as customers shift to more sustainable energy solutions,” said Joe Woomer, vice president of Grid & Technical Solutions. “This new tool will support that effort, as well as the company’s plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.”

The Hosting Capacity Tool’s analytic capabilities will evolve and improve as more intelligent grid devices and smart meters are deployed and additional grid information becomes available. This initial roll out of the tool addresses solar installations connecting directly to the distribution grid; the company plans to add information for residential customers in the near future.

The effort is part of the company's Grid Transformation Plan – a 10-year plan to transform Virginia's energy grid and give customers more ways to save money, more reliable service, and more access to renewable energy.

In addition to supporting Virginia’s goal to move to 100 percent clean energy by 2045, Dominion Energy also has a comprehensive clean energy strategy to achieve net zero carbon dioxide and methane emissions from its power generation and gas infrastructure operations nationwide by 2050.
