Dominion Energy Launches New Program to Help Reduce Customers' Carbon Footprint

  • New program complements other clean energy options that help customers conserve energy, lower bills and reduce emissions.
  • GreenTherm program helps customers offset carbon emission from natural gas use.
  • Customers can support projects that reduce emissions in North Carolina.

GASTONIA, N.C., Sept. 6, 2022 – Dominion Energy's residential and commercial natural gas customers in North Carolina can now sign up for GreenTherm, a new and affordable way customers can reduce their carbon footprint and support renewable natural gas projects. The voluntary program will allow customers to offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home by supporting projects, including several in North Carolina, that reduce emissions.

Carbon offsets balance emissions from one source by reducing emissions from others, such as landfills. Through GreenTherm, customers will have the opportunity to support projects that reduce landfill emissions and preserve forested areas to capture carbon emissions from the air in North Carolina and neighboring states. To participate, customers may purchase carbon offsets for as little as $3 per month. A typical residential customer can offset their entire carbon footprint from natural gas usage for just $12 a month.

Emissions-reducing projects in North Carolina include:

  • Landfill gas capture and reuse – Buncombe County Landfill, Alexander, NC
  • Landfill gas capture and reuse – Johnston County Landfill, Smithfield, NC
  • Landfill gas capture and flare – Upper Piedmont Landfill, Rougemont, NC
  • Avoided forest conversion – Noles Farms, Washington and Hyde Counties, NC

“Our customers want clean energy, and they want to have a positive impact on the environment,” said Rusty Harris, Vice President and General Manager of Dominion Energy North Carolina Gas. “We share their passion, and this program delivers in a big way. GreenTherm is a convenient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of natural gas while making a difference for the environment and reducing emissions close to home.”

The voluntary program is available to residential and commercial customers. Dominion Energy does not earn a profit from the program. The offsets are independently certified. Customers can sign up at DominionEnergy.com/GreenTherm, through the Dominion Energy mobile app, or by calling Customer Service at (877) 776-2427.

The new program is just one way Dominion Energy is helping its customers reduce their carbon footprint. The company has also expanded its ThermWise energy efficiency and conservation programs to help homeowners and businesses use less energy, protect the environment and save on their monthly bills.

Additionally, the company is exploring the use of zero-carbon hydrogen and advancing carbon-beneficial renewable natural gas to significantly reduce emissions from customers' homes.
