Dominion Energy, Columbia Urban League partner on diverse recruitment efforts
CAYCE, S.C. – (May 8, 2024) – Nearly 30 high school seniors from diverse backgrounds gathered in the Midlands for a behind-the-scenes look at skilled careers in the energy industry which do not require a four-year college degree.
Dominion Energy and the Columbia Urban League partnered Wednesday to host select students from Richland County School District One, Richland County School District Two and Orangeburg Consolidated School District at the Dominion Energy Lake Murray Training Center. The 37-acre complex serves as a training center for apprentice lineworkers and electricians.
Students spent the morning learning about careers in power delivery, electric distribution and natural gas through hands-on experience with industry tools and infrastructure. Each activity provided students with a first-hand look at skilled craft and trade positions within Dominion Energy.
The participating students are eligible to apply for positions within the company.
“Working for Dominion Energy is a 24/7 commitment to the customers we serve and many of the skilled jobs we offer are very physically demanding,” said Dominion Energy South Carolina President Keller Kissam. “These jobs also require teamwork, self-discipline and unwavering dedication to answer the call. Many of these students are athletes for their schools and exemplify these same qualities.”
The Urban League coordinated with school faculty and staff to recommend students for the program. The recruitment event is part of Dominion Energy’s ongoing commitment to a diverse workforce.
"Dominion Energy has had a long history of corporate social responsibility, particularly in providing career opportunities for underserved communities,” said Columbia Urban League CEO James T. McLawhorn Jr. “We applaud Dominion for establishing this partnership by providing livable skills training for high school graduates, which is essential in meeting the demands of our emerging workforce. We're looking forward to this continued partnership in empowering these participants to become productive and contributing members of society."
