CAYCE, S.C. (Nov. 10, 2022) - For Thomas McCullough, the journey from serving in the U.S. Navy to working with Dominion Energy was nothing short of smooth sailing.

McCullough was born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina, before joining the U.S. Navy in 1984. He served in the nuclear navy, where ships are powered by nuclear reactors. During that time, he worked with reactors on the USS Eisenhower.

“I would have liked to stay in the Navy longer than I served,” McCullough said. “It just wasn’t ideal for someone who wanted to start a family.”

McCullough joined the company in 1991 at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station shortly after serving in the Navy. He incorporated his expertise of working on a nuclear aircraft carrier into his career with the company, serving in four different departments over 31 years.

“Many of the required skills, knowledge, education and training align with what we do at Dominion Energy,” McCullough said. “The opportunities were there. I’ve enjoyed working here, and I don’t think I would have gotten the same opportunities anywhere else.”

McCullough supports the company’s Troops to Energy Jobs initiative, a nationwide program that provides a pathway for veterans to transition from military service to careers in the energy industry. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the initiative spearheaded by former Dominion Energy Chair and CEO Tom Farrell.

Since launching Troops to Energy Jobs in 2012, Dominion Energy has hired more than 1,600 veterans. More than 3,000 veterans now work for the company, representing about 18% of the workforce. One in five new hires is a veteran.

“Dominion Energy is a company where you can stay for your whole career,” McCullough said. “I’m here, and I’ve grown. I still plan to be here for a long time.”

Dominion Energy is a top 10 military employer nationwide as well as a top military spouse-friendly company. In 2021, Dominion Energy was awarded a HIRE Vets Platinum Medallion by the U.S. Department of Labor and recognized as a Best for Vets employer by Military Times.
