CAYCE, S.C. (Jan. 21, 2025) – – Dominion Energy is prepared and ready to respond to the potential for severe weather this week, including below-freezing temperatures and a mix of wintry precipitation across parts of the company’s service territory, particularly along the coast. While a slight change in the forecast can be the difference between freezing rain, sleet, snow or ice, crews will remain prepared and flexible. The company urges customers to stay safe and be prepared for the possibility of power outages.
If there is ice or snow accumulation, it can weigh down tree limbs and power lines, which could cause power outages. Fallen trees, limbs and power lines, as well as icy roads, create dangerous travel conditions. This can also limit safe access to areas where damage is the most severe, potentially prolonging power outages.
“Winter weather is very tricky - even the smallest change in the forecast can mean the difference between a thin layer of snow that doesn’t linger or significant amounts of ice that stubbornly stick around,” said Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “Whatever this storm brings our way, our crews are ready to roll. We want our customers to be ready too.”
Tips for customers to stay safe and be informed:
- Stay away from downed power lines. Winter weather and the potential for ice accumulation can cause trees and limbs to fall on power lines. Always assume downed power lines are energized and dangerous. South Carolina customers should call 888-333- 4465 right away to report a downed power line.
- Beware of hazardous and icy road conditions. Hazardous driving conditions can also contribute to power outages, as vehicle accidents on icy roads often cause damage to power poles, transformers and other electric facilities. We urge customers to stay off the roads if they can, and to drive safely if they must be on the roads.
- Download the Dominion Energy app. The fastest and most secure way to report or track an outage is using the Dominion Energy app. Customers may also report outages by going to DominionEnergy.com or calling 800-251-7234.
- Follow Dominion Energy on social media. The company will provide regular updates and additional tips to help keep customers informed and safe.
- Keep snow accumulation off your gas meter. When clearing snow, do not pile it on or near the gas meter. If the meter or external appliance vent pipe is covered with snow, carefully remove the snow with a brush or broom. Do not scrape the meter or pipe with a sharp instrument as this may damage the equipment. Find other winter weather gas safety tips at DominionEnergy.com.
