RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 18, 2025) — Dominion Energy is holding a ribbon-cutting today to deploy a first-of-its-kind mobile battery energy storage system that serves as a clean alternative to diesel generators.
The Green Grid 90 kWh mobile battery energy storage system (MBESS) generates energy from solar panels on its roof and stores it in a lithium-ion battery. The units, which also can be plugged in to charge, are emissions-free and don’t require fuel or make noise. They can also be daisy-chained together for larger power demands.
The Green Grid 90kWh MBESS (patent pending by Dominion Energy) is the first non-diesel mobile battery energy storage system to meet the most stringent fire prevention and safety standards – most notably ‘UL 9540’ – which means it’s the only such unit that can be covered by insurance. One unit can power a medium-sized food truck for nine hours.
“This is the next generation of mobile power sources,” said Ed Baine, Executive Vice President of Utility Operations and President of Dominion Energy Virginia. “These units generate energy, don’t have any emissions, and don’t require fuel. Plus, they don’t make noise like diesel generators. They’re ideal for small businesses, utilities or government agencies that need portable power – and want clean energy, too.”
The Green Grid 90 kWh MBESS is trailer-mounted, has wheels, and can be towed by a mid-sized SUV. It can be used to power festivals, concerts, weddings, remote worksites, electric vehicles, and provide backup power to utilities and emergency management organizations during outages. In 2024, the prototype units were instrumental in establishing a communications network for emergency support personnel during Florida’s recovery efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Invented by Dominion Energy, the Green Grid 90 kWh MBESS is designed, manufactured, sold and serviced by Power Up Connect, a Maryland-based charging technology company. The product is now available for commercial purchase.
