Dominion Energy Urges Public to Contact 811 Before Digging

04/01/2026

April is National Safe Digging Month

CAYCE, S.C. (April 1, 2026) – As spring home and landscaping projects ramp up, Dominion Energy is reminding customers to contact 811 before starting any outdoor digging.

South Carolina law requires anyone planning a digging project to notify 811 at least three full business days in advance to have underground utility lines properly located and marked. This simple step helps prevent injuries, service outages and traffic disruptions.

Third-party damage is the leading risk to Dominion Energy’s natural gas system in South Carolina. Landscaping, irrigation and fence installation projects are among the most common activities that can damage underground natural gas and electric lines. Even smaller projects such as planting a tree, installing a mailbox or building a deck require calling or submitting a ticket to 811 beforehand.

“Underground gas and electric lines deliver the energy we need to keep our homes comfortable and businesses running,” said Shaun Randall, vice president of gas distribution and customer solutions for Dominion Energy South Carolina. “We work year‑round to raise awareness on the importance of safe digging to protect the public and prevent property damage. National Safe Digging Month is a great reminder that calling 811 isn’t optional – it’s the law.”

Follow these three quick and simple steps before beginning any digging project:

  1. Call. Call 811 or visit SC811.com to submit a request.
  2. Wait. Professional locators will mark utility lines with flags or paint at no charge within three full business days after your request.
  3. Dig. Once all utility lines have been marked, careful digging around the marks can begin.
